The Database Senior Engineer is responsible for overseeing database operations, ensuring system security and compliance, and optimizing performance. They manage environment setups, maintain documentation, and collaborate with IT teams to support reliable and efficient database systems.
WHAT WILL YOU DO
You will oversee the day-to-day operations of the SQL Server or Oracle estate, including monitoring disk space, backups, log shipping, database mirroring, clustering, availability groups, and troubleshooting. Proactively optimising performance and monitor storage and capacity planning.
You’ll manage the refresh and maintenance of DEV, QA, UAT, and Live environments, including checking and applying code changes, restoring backups, and ensuring environments are up-to-date.
You’ll ensure the SQL Server or Oracle estate is secured, up-to-date with security patches, operating system updates, and aligned with company policies. Maintain proper database security and monitor compliance.
You’ll provide prompt, precise root cause analysis and work closely with IT Development and Infrastructure teams to resolve issues and improve performance.
- Disaster Recovery & Incident Management: Participate in disaster recovery exercises, ensure all incidents are handled within expected service levels, and properly documented. Participate in the support rota and provide on-call availability.
- Documentation & Service Management: Maintain comprehensive, up-to-date documentation and adhere to documented Service Management processes to meet KPIs and SLOs.
- Collaboration & Continuous Improvement: Collaborate with the Service Desk, Development, and Infrastructure teams to resolve incidents and refine database designs to meet performance and storage requirements.
- Mentorship & Team Development: Mentor junior database engineers, providing guidance and support to enhance their technical skills and professional growth. Lead training sessions and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
WHAT WILL YOU BRING
You will have strong experience administering and troubleshooting business-critical, high-transaction database environments, preferably within trading or financial settings. You should have hands-on expertise supporting Endur and similar platforms, along with proven knowledge of clustering, availability groups, and database mirroring. Experience with third-party monitoring tools and the administration of database platforms in the cloud is also essential.
- Proven deep experience in MS/SQL Server administration, with a focus on performance tuning
- Deep knowledge of security risk assessments, compliance, and information security standards
- Strong scripting and automation skills
- Strong understanding of Windows Server and virtualisation
